Pet photoshoots

Getting a portrait you’ll love

A portrait can be a lovely gift, a way to remember a pet who’s no longer with you, or simply something to make you smile every time you walk past it. The right choice depends on the style you like, your budget and how soon you need it.

Painted, digital or photographed?

Hand-painted and drawn portraits are original pieces of art, made by an artist from your photos. They take the longest and cost the most, but you get something nobody else has.

Custom prints turn a photo into an illustration or a themed design, printed on paper, canvas or gifts. They’re quicker and cheaper, and great for a bit of fun.

Photoshoots mean a photographer spends time with your pet, at home, in a park or in a studio, and you choose your favourite shots.

Choosing the photo

For a painting or print, the photo makes all the difference. Pick one that’s sharp, taken in daylight, at your pet’s eye level, and showing their whole head including the ears. Most artists are happy to help you choose, so send a few.

What to check before you order

How long it takes. Popular artists are often booked weeks or months ahead, and get busy before Christmas, so ask early if it’s a gift.

What’s included. Check the size, whether framing and delivery are included, and whether you’ll see a preview and can ask for changes.

Deposits. Many artists ask for a deposit before they start. Make sure you know what happens if you change your mind.
